With the popularity of portable media players, particularly Apple’s iPod, I’ve been seeing around town a proliferation of headphones over people’s ears. It gave me pause to think for a moment – if we’re all walking around with headphones on and not communicating with each other – what does that say about us as a society, and what implications does this personal isolation mean for our culture in the future?

Ironically, I was sitting on the bus listening to a portable compact disc player while thinking about this.
